| Supporters and Players enjoy GISC Legends Night Two \ Player of the Year results |
|
Over 25 former players from all decades were joined by Simon Royce, Nicky Southall, Andy Hessenthaler and Gills young player of the season, Jack Payne, who were warmly welcomed into the 4-4-2 Sports & Social Club in Featherby Road, for an evening which raised over £650 for charity.
Our most senior "Golden Oldie" on parade was legendary centre forward Ernie Morgan who celebrated his 82nd birthday back in January. His good friend Brian Yeo, who jointly holds the record with him for most League goals in a season (31), was unfortunately away on holiday so unable to attend.
Inside forward Artthur Hughes is only a few months younger than Ernie and although he was born in Scotland played most of his football South of the border including spells at both Notts County and Forest. After hanging up his boots took the reins at various clubs on the Kent non-league circuit. He later joined up with legendary goalkeeper John Simpson in a bookmaking partnership at Crayford Greyhound Stadium.
Peter Godfrey, a sprightly looking 71 year-old, made his debut for Gills back in 1961 and treasures his Fourth Division Championship medal which he won when playing for the Club during the 1963/64 season.
There was quite a large contingent of players at the function who joined the Gills under former manager Basil Hayward, which included, Bobby Folds, Bill Williams, Ray Bailey, Jimmy MvVeigh, Graham Knight, Dave Quirke and Kenny Hill.
Ray Bailey was also an accomplished County cricketer and regularly played for Northants whilst Bill Williams returned to Priesfield after hanging up his boots to become the Gills commercial manager.
Former Player of the Year, George Jacks, was one of the first ex-Gills to accept our invitation to this year's Legends Night and has many fond memories of his time at Priestfield including promotion under Andy Nelson . He was a bit miffed though at being released by former boss Gerry Summers during the summer of 1976. Another former POY in attendance was Andy Ford who later became manager of Gravesend & Northfleet. After retiring from playing he set up a successful sports trophy business in Bearsted and is currently in the hotseat at Welling United.
Former goalkeeper Gary Sutton who has now risen to the rank of police inspector at the Kent Police HQ in Maidstone, was joined by another shot-stopper in the mould of Vince Bartram who is currently coaching at AFC Bournemouth.
Dave Wiltshire, Alan Walker, Joe Dunne and Danny Westwood had plenty of attention from Gills fans who were eager to know what they'd been up to since moving on from Priestfield. Joe Dunne has held a number of posts at Colchester United since moving there as a player from Gills whilst Danny Westwood is now a software analyst with a financial institution in the City of London.
Simon Royce was presented with his GISC POY runners-up trophy and was joined by Andy Hessenthaler, Nicky Southall and Gills young player of the year Jack Payne on stage A number of football memorabilia items were auctioned off including a pair of keeper's gloves donated by Simon Royce plus a Gills football shirt signed by every member of the Gills team in the Play-Off final. Former managers Peter Taylor and Len Ashurst donated a training top and signed autobiography respectively.
There was also a unique Golf umbrella signed by this seasons squad, plus a shirt signed all the Gills players in the squad that were narrowly beaten by Aston Villa in this seasons FA Cup. The GISC would like to thank all members and non-members who attended. We hope you all enjoyed the evening. Player of the Year 2008/2009 Results The GISC Player of the Year for 2008/2009 was also announced at the Legends night.
Defender Simon King walked away with both the GISC Player of the Year and GISC Away Player of the Year award. Goalkeeper Simon Royce came second place with talented former Spurs winger Andy Barcham in third position. The GISC Supporter of the Year award was presented to Jason Lyndon. Jason has been following the Gills home and away for over 20 seasons, has arranged the two GISC Legends evenings and also plays a key part in the GISC sales operation. Congratulations Jason. |
